Chiya Bhiya Kathayat
Recording of a performance by the bard Camalek Bahadur Dholi, aged ~54, and two assistants. It contains the invocation and the first of 4 epics recorded on 4 November 1969 at the administrative center of Dandeldhura District, Nepal, by Marc Gaborieau and Mireille Helffer of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). This recording was made outdoors, on a Nagra recorder at 19cm/s and simultaneously on cassette. The digitalized version has been mounted from digitalizations of tapes archived under catalog number BM.1970.041.004 at the Centre pour la Recherche en Ethnomusicologie (CREM), Université de Paris-X, Nanterre, France (http://crem.parisson.com). The performance was simultaneously recorded on side A of a cassette labelled "HUDKIYA 1" (not currently archived). Mme Helffer notes that the end of the Nagra recording suffers from uneven speed. The sound file presented here is composed of two digitalized tracks end to end: #1 CNRSMH_I_1970_041_004_13_01; #2 CNRSMH_I_1970_041_004_13_02. (In the CREM online catalog, only 11 digitalized tracks, none containing an epic, were listed for tape BM.1970.041.004 as of Sept. 2010.) Regions (corresponding to the two tracks above): #1 00:00:00,000 to 00:08:15,270 length 00:08:15,270; #2 00:08:15,270 to 00:22:17,880 length 00:14:02,610; length (total): 22:17,880.

Chiya and Bhiya Kathayat
Annotation of the recording of a performance by the hudke bard Camalek Bahadur Dholi, aged ~54, and two assistants. This is the first of 4 epics recorded on 4 November 1969 at the administrative center of Dandeldhura District, Nepal, by Marc Gaborieau and Mireille Helffer of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The recording was transcribed in the field by Man Bahadur Kathayat of Dandeldhura in a notebook of Gaborieau's marked "Hudkiya", on pages 5 (invocation), and 7-21 ("Bhime Kathayat", the Kumauni title of the epic). Prof Jaya Raj Pant reviewed the transcription and prepared a translation into standard Nepali and further notes in 2007. The transcription was again revised by Mr Man Bahadur Shahu in 2009. The English and French translations, based on these annotations and Gaborieau's notes, were prepared by Boyd Michailovsky in 2008-2010. Further materials are available at http://www.vjf.cnrs.fr/epopee.

A fagment lost due to a tape-change has been restored in the present version from a cassette labeled "HUDKE 3", which was recorded at the same time as the tapes. (The cassettes are not currently archived.) The digitalization is composed of 3 regions: #1 00:00:00,000 to 00:23:50,413 length: 00:23:50,413; #2 00:23:50,413 to 00:25:22,632 length: 00:01:32,219; #3 00:25:22,632 to 00:41:34,387 length: 00:16:11,755. The sources of these regions are the following: #1 = CNRSMH_I_1970_041_008_01 0:00 - 23:50,413; #2 = cassette "HUDKE 2" side B 15:11,117 - 16:43,336; #3 = CNRSMH_I_1970_041_009_01 00:01,736 - 16:13,491. The full cassette recording: 8 minutes on cassette "HUDKE 2" side A track 2; 31:18 on cassette "HUDKE 2" side B; 1 minute on cassette "HUDKE 3" side A track 1.

Rani Maula
Annotation of the recording of a performance by the hudke bard Bahadur Dholi, aged ~54, of Camalek (?) village, and two assistants. This is the third of 4 epics recorded on 4 November 1969 at the administrative center of Dandeldhura District, Nepal, by Marc Gaborieau and Mireille Helffer of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The recording was transcribed in the field by Man Bahadur Kathayat of Dandeldhura in a notebook of Gaborieau's marked "HUDKIYA" (right-hand pages, new numbering 1-27, following p. 66), with annotations added by Gaborieau. Prof Jaya Raj Pant revised the transcription and prepared a translation into standard Nepali, a plot outline, and vocabulary notes in 2007. Marie Lecomte-Tilouine prepared the French translation in 2008. The English translation, based on these annotations and Gaborieau's notes, was prepared by Boyd Michailovsky in 2008-2010. The transcription was again revised for conformity to the recording by Mr Man Bahadur Shahu in 2009. Further materials are available at http://www.vjf.cnrs.fr/epopee.

Bika Paneru
Recording of a performance by the hudke bard Pratap Dholi of Bhatgaun assisted by Jain Man Dhole of Bhatgaun, Jogi Dhole of Sirola, and Dumre Dhole of Tatar. Recorded on 14 November 1969 by Marc Gaborieau and Mireille Helffer of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The recordings were made on a Nagra recorder at 9,5cm/s and on cassette. The digitalized version has been mounted from digitalizations of tapes archived at the Centre pour la Recherche en Ethnomusicologie (CREM), Université de Paris-X, Nanterre, France (http://crem.parisson.com). The tracks are catalogued as "POEME HEROIQUE DE BHARAT". A recording on cassettes (not yet archived) was made at the same time as the tapes. The sound file is composed of 2 regions: #1 00:00:00,000 to 00:42:00,234 length: 00:42:00,234; #2 00:42:00,234 to 01:14:16,393 length: 0:32:16,159; these are the digitalizations of the following original tapes, joined end to end: BM_70_041_020; BM_70_041_021; It is clear from the cassette recording that the performance was interrupted during the tape-change and that nothing was lost. The recording begins ~9 min. into cassette 4A, and continues on 4B and 5A to 18:31.

Recorded on 14 November 1969 by Marc Gaborieau and Mireille Helffer of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The recording was transcribed in the field by Man Bahadur Kathayat of Dandeldhura in one of Gaborieau's notebooks, labelled "VIVEK" p. 1-24 (right-hand pages). The entire epic was translated into French in draft form by Gaborieau in the field (same notebook, left-hand pages). Prof Jaya Raj Pant revised the transcription and prepared a translation into standard Nepali, plot outlines, and vocabulary notes in 2007. The transcription was again revised by Man Bahadur Shahu in 2009. The French translation presented here, based on these annotations and translations, was prepared by Rémi Bordes in 2009. Further materials are available at http://www.vjf.cnrs.fr/epopee.

The beginning of the narrative myth "The Nine Good Skillful Ones", recited by the shaman Haribān Kāmī of Bobang (d. 2003 aged 57) at the request of Gregory Maskarinec. The text relates the origin of the first shaman and the first witches. The text presented here corresponds to lines 1-166 (pp. 33-39) of the full recitation (1139 lines) published in NSOTII:33-75. It differs slightly in line numbering and in content from the published source in that (1) some lines have been re-divided to correspond to breath groups in the recording and (2) some temporizing lines, omitted from the published version, have been restored. Before the recitation presented here, the shaman made a series of false starts consisting of such temporizing lines; these are transcribed NSOTII:634n154.

The beginning of the narrative myth "The Nine Good Skillful Ones", recited by the shaman Haribān Kāmī of Bobang (d. 2003 aged 57). The text concerns the origin of the first shaman and of witches. The digitalization is an extract from the digitalization of the cassette Bhuji2000#9A, from 11m17s to 25m06s, where the recording appears to have been accidentally interrupted. Some of the recording (corresponding to lines 167-270 of the published text) is lost before it resumes on cassettes #9B and #10A. A minidisk recording, made at the same time, is complete but is marred by parasite clicks. The present track begins with some false starts, transcribed in NSOTII:634n154, followed by the beginning of the myth (NSOTII:33-39, lines 1-166). REFERENCE: NSOTII : Maskarinec, Gregory G., 2008, Nepalese Oral Shaman Texts II, Harvard Oriental Series volume 68, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and London, England, Harvard University Press.

The first half hour of "Payalpur's Recital 3", a text similar to the "Dowry recital", particularly relevant to women and women's afflictions. Each line is recited by the shaman Ginde Thāpā and repeated by his disciples, the shamans Tam Bahādur Adaī and Dal Bahādur Adai. The recital is accompanied by regular drumming. The full transcription and translation is published in NSOTII:513-528. This digitalization ends with Ginde's recital of line 175 (p. 520) of the published text; the remainder is on a second minicassette Bhuji2000#4A. The beginning of the narrative "Payalpur's Recital 3", a text similar to the "Dowry recital", particularly relevant to women and women's afflictions. The shaman recites each line, which is then repeated by his disciples. The full transcription is published in NSOTII 513-528. The present transcription, covering lines 1-60 (of 404), differs very slightly from the published version (NSOTII 513-515), mainly in that a few extra repetitions and asides omitted from the published version have been restored. As in the published version, the regular repetitions by the disciples are not transcribed, although they occasionally differ in minor details from the guru's recital. Leading syllables, often a simple "e" or "ya he" are not transcribed.

This recital, according to Karṇa Vīr, is applied at the beginning of every ceremony for protection against witches. The text itself, however, does not have much to do with witches, and is a more general invocation of deities enlisted to protect the body. It suggests considerable influence of Kānphaṭa yogis, beginning with invocation of nāth deities and then a description of a Kānphaṭa, while the rudrākṣa seeds are extremely important to the yogins. (NSOTI:note683) The shaman Karṇa Vīr Kāmī is from Ciurī Village, Lahã, Jājarkoṭ. The full transcription and translation is published in NSOTI:191-194. The Conclusion of the Tiligrama recital, beginning at line 417 of the published versions. The shaman, tricked into revealing his identity, cures the king of Sinja (who he has earlier cursed) and they divide their jurisdictions into the rulings of the day, the king's, and the rulings of the night, the shaman's. "Each of the many Nepalese shamans with whom I have worked agreed that "Tilīgramā" is their most important text. Shamans use it as a central part of every initiation and death ceremony, and also recite it when treating both critically ill patients and clients of high status. It is needed whenever the patient's afflictions may have been caused by acts of sorcery performed by shamans. … "Tilīgramā" is the name of a level of the underworld where the original shaman learns to be a blacksmith." NSOTI p. 482. [V1.2.10]
